Each year the NYC Brownfield Partnership formally recognizes successful NYC brownfield clean-up and redevelopment projects at the Big Apple Brownfield Awards, an awards and networking event. Award-winning projects will be recognized in the following areas: Community Advocacy, Outreach, and Engagement; Community Space and Support Services; Sustainable Remediation; Sustainable Building Design; Economic Development; Innovative Remediation; Open Space; and Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise Opportunities.
Winners will be notified in the Spring and will be recognized at an in-person awards event on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
The Big Apple Brownfield Awards were created by the New York City Brownfield Partnership to highlight the most remarkable brownfield projects in New York City and the success of practitioners in the City’s brownfield industry each year. Here are the award categories for 2025:
The awards continue to celebrate and bring public attention to the most successful brownfield redevelopment projects, such as those that have used innovative remediation techniques, engaged the community positively, and demonstrated ingenuity in sustainability and green construction.

The Big Apple Brownfield Awards promote excellence in brownfield redevelopment by honoring successful brownfield projects in New York City.

Award-winning projects have had positive effects on the community and have demonstrated excellence in the following areas: Supportive and Affordable Housing, Brownfield Opportunity Area Connectivity, Collaboration, Community Outreach, Economic Development, Environmental Protection, Green Building, Innovation, Open Space, and Sustainable Remediation.
In addition to recognizing Brownfield projects, the Partnership also recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact on brownfield redevelopment in NYC through its Distinguished Service Award. Past winners of the Partnership’s Distinguished Service Awards include Executive Director and co-founder of New Partners for Community Revitalization, Jody Kass (2014), OER Deputy Director, Shaminder Chawla (2015), NYSDEC Director of Remedial Bureau B, Robert Cozzy (2015), and NYSDEC Chief of Superfund and Brownfield Cleanup, Jane H. O’Connell (2015).
